Paris: Conspicuous Consumption at Versailles

On the one hand, Versailles is profoundly depressing. The equivalent of one year's GDP for France went into building it, while less priviledged people starved. On the other hand, it is utterly amazing. The scale and the opulence is beyond belief. The Grand Canyon of palaces. First, a few photos of the exterior, then some of the features of the interior, then the wonderful gardens.

Versailles is not the place to go to for ideas for decorating. Everything is over the top. Gold everywhere, brocade chairs, inlaid furniture, fireplaces big enough to roast an ox in and that require tree trunks for fuel, endless halls with sculptures or mirrors, ceilings with intricate detailing.

I do love the formal gardens, which are visible from the rooms on the upper floors.
